Bikes And Bike Helmets Are Now TAX EXEMPT
The Ontario government is helping families get more active with a retail sales tax exemption for bikes and bike helmets. From December 1, 2007 until December 31, 2010 the Ontario government will exempt new or used bicycles costing $1,000 or less from retail sales tax (RST). Bike helmets and other safety equipment like reflectors, lights, bells, horns and mirrors will also be exempted.
"We want to encourage more Ontarians — young and young-at-heart — to get outdoors, spend time riding bikes as a family and with friends, or to try riding to work if possible, leaving the car at home," said Premier McGuinty.
"Together, we're building a culture of health and well-being across Ontario by encouraging more families to embrace active living.I hope this announcement will mean a few more families can afford to ride together," McGuinty said. "And I hope a few more Ontarians will decide to try commuting by bike instead of by car."
Did you know that most people can easily walk a quarter mile in 5 minutes? It may not take as long as you think to walk to and from work. Click here to calculate the exact walking distance of your route to work. You can even find out how many calories you'll burn! Zoom in on your area and click from point to point to measure your route.
Or take it up a notch and cycle, rollerblade or run. There are many bike trails throughout York Region so you can avoid some of our busiest streets. Cycling is great for trips up to 10 km each way. It’s often faster to bike than to drive if you’re only going 5 km.
You can even combine public transit with active commuting. YRT/Viva is exploring opportunities to install bike racks on their vehicles to assist bike riding passengers.
