Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority is Smart Commute's Newest Member

Newmarket, Ontario (February 2, 2010) – Yesterday marked the beginning of Smart Commute’s annual Carpool Week. Smart Commute offices across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), including Smart Commute Central York (SCCY), are encouraging companies and their employees to consider carpooling.

“SCCY is proud to take part in this event,” says Advisory Board Member, Adrian Barker. “Carpool Week is an excellent way for commuters to save money, energy, and cut down on their greenhouse gas emissions just by driving to work with a friend!”

In celebration of Carpool Week, SCCY hosted a launch event with its newest member, Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA) on February 2, 2010. During the event, employees had the opportunity to learn more about Carpool Week, and how their daily commute affects their budget and the environment.

“We are thrilled to join the Smart Commute Program,” says LSRCA Chair, Virginia Hackson. “Our organization is dedicated to the preservation of the environment, and I couldn’t think of a better way to further our initiatives than to join SCCY.”

To help find a convenient driving partner, potential carpoolers can visit Smart Commute’s free ride-matching service, www.carpoolzone.ca. Users input their driving route, a nickname, and the days they wish to carpool and Carpool Zone provides the most suitable matches.

SCCY is a program of the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce with funding and support from Metrolinx, York Region and the Town of Newmarket. SCCY has helped commuters prevent 198,000 kg of greenhouse gas emissions by eliminating over 14,000 car trips since 2006. Fourteen organizations with more than 11,000 employees have signed on to Smart Commute Central York.  For more information about Smart Commute visit www.smartcommutecentralyork.ca.

Smart Commute is a joint venture between Metrolinx and area municipalities.  More than 120 employers with 300,000 employees have signed on to the Smart Commute program.  Members of the public can also access services such as the Carpool Zone online ridematching service at www.smartcommute.ca.
